Moncton, New Brunswick - The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Regional Minister for Prince Edward Island, and Member of Parliament for Egmont, announced today an important investment for repairs and upgrades of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s assets in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.).
Approximately $500,000 in federal infrastructure funding will be allocated to six projects for the refurbishment and environmental remediation work at five lighthouses throughout P.E.I. and the installation of storage fuel tanks for use by the Canadian Coast Guard at the Charlottetown Airport.
Work such as lead paint removal and interior and exterior repainting will be carried out at the following five lighthouses: Bedeque (Seacow Head), New London, North Cape, North Rustico and Haszard Point Rear Range. More extensive repairs will be carried out at the North Rustico lighthouse, including the replacement of doors, the installation of a waste disposal system and upgrades to the heating system.
In addition, three storage fuel tanks will be replaced at the Charlottetown Airport. The tanks are used by the Canadian Coast Guard to service its helicopter. The Government’s infrastructure investments will create jobs for Canadians, especially in rural communities.
Since 2006, the Government of Canada has made unprecedented investments in public infrastructure across Canada. Last fall, Prime Minister Harper announced an additional investment of $5.8 billion over the next two years to build and renew infrastructure across the country in areas such as heritage, First Nations education, defense, borders, research facilities, small craft harbours, transportation and search and rescue to create jobs from coast to coast to coast. As part of this funding, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard will receive approximately $551 million.
