July 17, 2015 – Ottawa, ON – Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada
The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, today announced the appointment of Rowland Harrison, Q.C., as the Ministerial Special Representative to lead a comprehensive review of the operations of the Canada Petroleum Resources Act and to lead an ongoing engagement process on how the Act can best contribute to the responsible development of Canada's Arctic oil and gas resource opportunities.
This engagement, and subsequent review, is an example of the Government of Canada's commitment to encouraging economic development through responsible resource development. In support of this commitment and in looking to remain competitive, periodic reviews of the regulatory regimes that govern resource development are prudent to ensure that they are addressing the evolving regulatory, northern and industrial landscapes.
Over the coming months, engagement will be part of this review and to this end, Aboriginal governments' and other stakeholders’ views will be fully considered as this initiative progresses.
