All-new sound and light show experience welcomes its first spectators
July 10, 2015 – Ottawa – Department of Canadian Heritage
Canadian Heritage, in collaboration with exclusive sponsor Manulife, kicked off the inaugural season of Northern Lights this evening. This free, entirely new 30-minute experience of sound and light is a thrilling thematic journey through Canada’s history presented in spectacular detail against the backdrop of the Parliament Buildings.
Thousands were in attendance as Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament (Ottawa–Orléans)—on behalf of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages—and Peter Wilkinson, Senior Vice President, Industry, Regulatory and Government Affairs at Manulife, officially launched this one-of-a-kind production.
As momentum builds toward Canada 150 celebrations, Northern Lights reflects the important milestones in Canadian history on the road to 2017.
“I invite everyone to come to Parliament Hill this summer to experience Northern Lights, a show that shares our history and achievements and captures the essence of the Canadian spirit. As we approach the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, this is a great opportunity to learn about inspirational people and events that made Canada a country that is strong, proud and free.”
—The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
“Northern Lights is a unique cultural experience in Canada’s Capital Region that will inspire a strong feeling of pride in our country. As Canada 150 nears, I invite everyone to spend a summer evening on the lawns of Parliament Hill enjoying this breathtaking show.”
—Royal Galipeau, Member of Parliament for Ottawa—Orléans
“We at Manulife are delighted to support this one-of-a-kind production that celebrates Canada and its history. We would like to think that our founding president and Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, would marvel at this spectacle and how far we have come as a nation 200 years after he was born.”
—Peter Wilkinson, Senior Vice President, Industry, Regulatory and Government Affairs, Manulife
