Prince Edward Island National Park hosts annual Surf Guarding event
July 17, 2015 – Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Parks Canada
Come out to Brackley Beach on Saturday, July 25th, at 7 p.m. to watch Prince Edward Island National Park Surf Guards demonstrate their life-saving skills in the annual Surf Guard Competition. The event includes running, swimming, paddling, simulated rescues with boards and cans, and other important skills. This year’s competition will coincide with National Drowning Prevention week: July 19th–25th.
The competition will last approximately 1.5 hours and feature:
- Board rescues where Surf Guards save “victims” to showcase life-saving skills.
- The Beach Flag Competition – a fast-paced activity where Surf Guards participate in an elimination race which could be likened to a game of “musical chairs”.
- The Ironguard Team Relay – which demonstrates the endurance of Surf Guards as they run, swim and paddle a rescue board.
For the competition, Surf Guards are divided up into teams from the “East” and “West” ends of Prince Edward Island National Park.
