Investments in national infrastructure are a key element in the Government of Canada’s efforts to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity.
For over 50 years, the Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP) facility in Resolute, Nunavut, has provided critical support for research activities in Canada’s North to help it realize its true potential as a healthy, prosperous and secure region within a strong and sovereign Canada.
Each year, the PCSP provides ground and air support services to an average of 140 research projects involving up to 1,100 researchers from more than 50 Canadian and international universities, governments and other organizations.
The PCSP also provides field logistics support to the Department of National Defence for its Arctic training activities in Resolute and hosts the Canadian Armed Forces Arctic Training Centre. This centre provides a permanent Arctic training capability to the Canadian Armed Forces.
Since 2009, the Government of Canada has invested $33 million in the Resolute Facility of the Polar Continental Shelf Program. These investments over the years have not only modernized the facility but doubled its capacity (accommodations and research space), which in turn strengthened its support to field research projects throughout Canada’s Arctic.
The Government of Canada is now committing up to an additional $4.4 million to upgrade the PCSP’s Resolute Facility, which includes replacing the air handling units, furnaces and fuel oil systems, installing cooling units, and replacing electrical controls and exhaust fans. The upgrades will provide improved logistical and communications services and improve the energy efficiency of this facility.
