On behalf of the Government of Canada, I congratulate the American team, winners of the FIFA World Cup. I would also like to applaud all of the teams who played in the tournament. They have inspired us throughout this tournament, the largest single-sport event ever organized in Canada.
Thousands of us from coast to coast to coast have looked upon you with admiration. You have amazed us with your skills, your sportsmanship, your leadership and your determination. You are role models to women and girls around the world, and we sincerely believe that this tournament will encourage many Canadians, of all ages, to lead an active life.
I would especially like to thank our Canadian team for bringing Canadians together around soccer. The red and white were everywhere; Canada was with you in the stadiums, and also right across the country. You represented us with pride and we wish you great success in the years to come.
On behalf of the Canadian people, I salute all of the organizers and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this major tournament a reality in six exceptional host cities. It is in large part because of people like you that Canada continues to be a leading sport nation.
