Projects to improve quality of life of local residents made possible thanks to New Building Canada Plan
July 30, 2015 – Nakusp, British Columbia– Infrastructure Canada
Residents of Nakusp will benefit from new water infrastructure thanks to joint funding from the governments of Canada and British Columbia through the Small Communities Fund.
This project will include the construction of a new water system structure, including the installation of a pressure reducing valve and flow meter. Once connected to the existing water distribution system, it will maintain consistent and reliable water pressure in the potable water main serving residents and businesses of the Sleepy Hollow area.
The project announced today is among 55 recently approved in British Columbia that will collectively receive more than $128 million in joint federal-provincial funding under the Small Communities Fund. These projects represent important investments in municipal infrastructure that maintain safe, healthy communities. Once complete, the work will significantly improve key municipal services for residents and help boost regional development.
Through the Small Communities Fund, the governments of Canada and British Columbia are working in partnership to provide funding for priority public infrastructure projects that deliver on local needs in communities across the province that have fewer than 100,000 residents. These investments support job creation and economic growth, thus sustaining a high quality of life in small communities across British Columbia for years to come.
"The installation of new drinking water infrastructure in the Sleepy Hollow area of Nakusp will not only benefit current residents and businesses, but future users for years to come. This project is an example of partnership between all three levels of government, working together to provide important infrastructure investments like this one, in communities across the province."

"On behalf of Council and the community of Nakusp I would like to thank the Federal Government and the Province of BC for making such an investment in our water infrastructure. The installation of the pressure reducing station and water mains will improve the efficiency and reliability of the water distribution system by reducing the number of water main breaks. It will also assist the Village with its water conservation efforts by reducing the substantial water losses we incur due to water leakage resulting from the water main breaks. Without programs like the New Building Canada Plan's Small Communities Fund it would be difficult for Nakusp to undertake this type of project."
