August 12, 2015 - Port-la-Joye—Fort Amherst National Historic Site of Canada - Parks Canada
Parks Canada invites Canadians to Port-la-Joye—Fort Amherst National Historic Site on Sunday, August 16 to take part in a day to honour Acadian culture.
The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. with an hour-long bilingual yoga session near the earthworks of the former British Fort Amherst. Yoga participants should bring a mat or a towel.
At 11:30 am, the National Acadian flag will be raised and Parks Canada will present programming illustrating the history and the modern day culture of the Acadian people of Prince Edward Island including Tuning in with the Past, an animated musical performance, as well as an Acadian-themed costume photo booth.
There will be family-friendly activities for visitors of all ages, including a crafting area where participants can try their creative skills with colourful Acadian-themed projects and a Mi’kmaw Interactive Workshop, offered by Methilda Knockwood-Snache. The day will conclude with a “Tintamarre”, a joyful, traditional parade filled with noisemakers and improvised musical instruments.
In the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved indoors. Light refreshments will be provided, but visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch.
Through initiatives like the celebration of National Acadian Feast Day, Parks Canada celebrates the historic and enduring contributions of Acadian people to the colourful cultural fabric of our country.
