“Seventy years ago, the fighting in the Second World War finally came to an end with the defeat of Japan. Through their efforts in Southeast Asia and the Far East, brave Canadians made remarkable contributions and, indeed, tremendous sacrifices.
“We remember those who were first called upon to defend Hong Kong in late 1941. Though gravely outnumbered, they fought valiantly in the cause of freedom. More than 550 of the Canadians who served in that grueling battle would never return to their home.
“Over the next almost four years, more than 10,000 Canadians contributed on land, in the air, and at sea in the various theatres of Southeast Asia and the Far East.
“The eventual triumph of Allied forces was accomplished through their determination and skill, and, sadly, with a great number of lives lost.
“We are the beneficiaries of the peace, freedom, and democracy that Canadians before us fought so selflessly to uphold. It is our duty always to honour the brave men and women who have served our country.”
