On September 17, 2015, David Robert Hagen, an inmate from the medium security unit at Joyceville Institution was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The inmate could not be resuscitated.
At the time of his death, Mr. Hagen, 36 years old, had been serving a sentence of 7 years, 4 months, and 15 days since June 16, 2010, for Possession of a Weapon, Assault Peace Officer and Assault Causing Bodily Harm.
The inmate’s next of kin have been notified of his death.
The medium security unit was placed on lockdown to allow staff to conduct a general search. The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates. Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so.
Regularly scheduled visits may be affected. Visitors who have already planned a visit are asked to contact the Institution directly.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
