October 1, 2015 - Calgary - National Energy Board
The National Energy Board (NEB) will hear oral traditional evidence from Aboriginal intervenors for the Energy East Project between November 9 and December 15, 2015.
The NEB recognizes that Aboriginal peoples have an oral tradition for sharing stories, lessons, and knowledge from generation to generation. This information cannot always be shared adequately in writing yet it will make up an important component of the evidence the Panel will consider in the assessment of the project.
Early and continued engagement with Aboriginal peoples is a key commitment of the NEB. There are six sessions (plus remote participation sessions) currently scheduled to gather Aboriginal oral traditional evidence:
- Regina, SK. November 9-10, 2015
- Calgary, AB. November 12-13, 2015
- Timmins, ON. November 17-19, 2015
- Thunder Bay, ON. November 24-26, 2015
- Kenora, ON. December 1-2, 2015
- Winnipeg, MB. December 8-9, 2015
- Remote participation available December 10-15, 2015
Due to the unique nature of oral traditional evidence, it can be held independently of other hearing process steps. Aboriginal Intervenors who are not currently scheduled will have an opportunity in 2016 to provide their oral traditional evidence. Regardless of when an Aboriginal Intervenor provides their traditional evidence they are able to fully participate in all other areas of the review process.
The National Energy Board is an independent federal regulator of several parts of Canada's energy industry with the safety of Canadians and protection of the environment as its top priority. Its purpose is to regulate pipelines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest. For more information on the NEB and its mandate, please visit www.neb-one.gc.ca.
