CNSC publishes REGDOC-1.6.1, Licence Application Guide: Nuclear Substances and Radiation Devices

News Release

October 20, 2015 – Ottawa, ON

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has published REGDOC-1.6.1, Licence Application Guide: Nuclear Substances and Radiation Devices.

REGDOC-1.6.1 sets out guidance in the preparation and submission of an application for a licence to carry out activities related to nuclear substances and radiation devices. It will document and clarify the CNSC’s current expectations.

REGDOC-1.6.1 supersedes RD/GD-371, Licence Application Guide: Nuclear Substances and Radiation Devices, which was published in November 2011. Since the initial publication of RD/GD-371, there have been a number of areas identified by the both the CNSC and applicants as needing clarification. This is an editorial revision of the original document to address those areas and does not introduce any new requirements.

The CNSC is also taking this opportunity to renumber the document in accordance with its new regulatory framework.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

Quick fact

  • In accordance with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and the regulations made under it, individuals wanting to possess, use, store, transfer, import, export, service and abandon nuclear substances and radiation devices require a licence issued by the CNSC.
