Public hearing for Cameco's Port Hope Conversion Facility licence renewal and participant funding offering

March 30, 2016 – Ottawa, ON

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a public hearing on November 9 and 10, 2016, in Port Hope, ON, to consider an application from Cameco Corporation to renew, for a period of 10 years, its nuclear fuel facility operating licence for the Port Hope Conversion Facility, located in Port Hope, ON. Cameco presently operates this facility under a licence issued by the CNSC and valid until February 28, 2017.

The Commission will be accepting both written and oral interventions for the hearing. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Commission Secretary by October 3, 2016.

Through its Participant Funding Program, the CNSC is offering up to $50,000 in funding to assist members of the public, Aboriginal groups and other stakeholders in reviewing Cameco’s licence renewal application and associated documents and participating in the Commission hearing process.

The deadline for submitting a completed participant funding application form tothe CNSC is June 30, 2016.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment; to implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

Quick Facts:

• The Port Hope Conversion Facility produces uranium hexafluoride (UF6), required in the production of fuel for light water nuclear reactors, and uranium dioxide (UO2), used to manufacture fuel for CANDU power reactors in Canada.
• The facility is located in the Municipality of Port Hope, situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario, approximately 100 kilometres east of Toronto, ON.
• Nuclear material has been processed at this site since the 1930s.
• Port Hope Conversion Facility’s operating performance is reported annually in the CNSC’s Regulatory Oversight Report for Uranium and Nuclear Substance Processing Facilities.
