Ombudsman’s statement on Open Government Week
March 11-17, 2019 is Open Government Week

Open government is a way of bringing government and citizens closer together by making information about the government more available and more accessible to Canadians.

This year’s Open Government theme is inclusion, an idea we at the Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime (OFOVC) can really get behind. Too many victims find themselves in situations where they do not have access to the information or services to which they are entitled. One of our most important tasks is to help victims find supports and information to assist them to navigate the criminal justice system.

I urge victims and survivors of crime who have been harmed by a federal offender (someone sentenced to more than 2 years in prison) to register with Correctional Service Canada or the Parole Board of Canada. Once registered, victims have a right to request and receive certain information about the offender who harmed them. Find out how to register on our website.

In the spirit of Open Government week, I also invite those who have an interest in victims and survivors of crime issues to subscribe to our OFOVC Community. This allows us to share updates and news on the work our office is doing, keeping our community informed and engaged. Send us an email to be part of our distribution network at myviews@ombudsman.gc.ca.
