Ombudsman’s statement on the third International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to Victims of Terrorism
August 21, 2020 - Today marks the third commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. As we continue to respond to the global COVID-19 pandemic, we must also take the time to remember and honour the victims of terrorism so they are not forgotten.
Victims and survivors deserve to have their needs addressed by delivering concrete supports. As the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime, I will continue to make recommendations to strengthen the rights of victims and survivors and make sure their voices are heard.
The long-term impacts of terrorism and extremist violence on victims and survivors are serious yet there continues to be a lack of assistance to help them heal and recover. We must work together to ensure all victims and survivors have access to justice, as well as to the tangible supports that are required to further build upon their resilience.
“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains a global challenge. It causes lasting damage to individuals, families and communities. These scars run deep, and while they may fade with time, they never disappear.”
Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General
