Parks Canada Invites Public Comments on Prince Edward Island National Park Management Plan

News Release

November 24, 2015                      Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island                                         Parks Canada

Parks Canada is reviewing the management plan for Prince Edward Island (PEI) National Park and is inviting the public to share their views on the future of the park.

Park management plans are important documents that guide the future of the national park over a ten-year period. The new PEI National Park management plan will outline key strategies for maintaining and improving the ecological integrity of the park, facilitating high-quality visitor experiences and conducting effective outreach, engagement and promotional activities.

Among many initiatives, Parks Canada will be considering ways to make gains in natural and cultural conservation, manage both older and new infrastructure, support the park’s vital coastal environment, increase learning opportunities and improve overall visitor experience. A newsletter outlining the vision for the park and the opportunities and challenges that will be addressed during the management plan review is also available.

 Quick Facts

  • PEI National Park protects an example of the Maritime Plain Natural Region and includes species-at-risk such as the endangered Piping Plover and the threatened Gulf of St. Lawrence Aster. The park is a major tourist attraction in Prince Edward Island with its warm, sandy beaches, beautiful scenery, network of trails and popular campgrounds.
  • PEI National Park is one of the smallest in Canada, encompassing approximately 24.7 km2. An additional 12.5 km2 of Federal Crown land adjacent to the park is also managed by Parks Canada. Despite its small size, the park includes Dalvay-by-the-Sea National Historic Site, a large network of trails and the Greenwich area―all of which will be included in the management plan.
  • Everyone interested in providing feedback is invited to complete the comment card before January1, which can be found online (see link below).
