2016 Terra Nova National Park Trans-Canada Highway Grand total investment: $27 M

Backgrounder

Terra Nova National Park

Terra Nova National Park protects the area where the North Atlantic Ocean touches Newfoundland’s Eastern Island Boreal Forest. As Newfoundland and Labrador’s first national park, Terra Nova has protected diverse habitats from woodlands, bogs and ponds to rugged coastlines and granite headlands since 1957. Rich with fish and sea mammals, the Terra Nova region has attracted pre-contact and European cultures for at least 5,000 years. Perched on the northeast coast of Newfoundland, Terra Nova National Park is a three-hour drive from the provincial capital of St. John’s. Though easily accessible by the Trans-Canada Highway, it is a traditional island wilderness with abundant wildlife like black bears, lynx, ospreys, moose and the rare indigenous Newfoundland marten.
