Parks Canada Announces New Activities at Forillon National Park for 2016
News Release
Fascinating discoveries in store for nature- and history-lovers
May 24, 2016 Gaspé, Quebec Parks Canada Agency
Starting on June 3, Forillon National Park will welcome visitors for the 2016 season. This year, Parks Canada is continuing to improve its visitor offer with even more innovative and educational events and activities as well as new investments in visitor facilities. At Forillon National Park, Parks Canada is introducing new discovery activities, making 2016 the perfect time to experience the outdoors and learn more about our flora and fauna as well as our history.
The staff at Forillon are putting together an exciting summer season for you – one that will feature new VIP excursions, a new talk and a new campfire storytelling activity, plus an array of new recreational activities!
National parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas represent the very best that Canada has to offer. Developing new and innovative programs and services is one way that Parks Canada helps more Canadians, including youth and newcomers, discover and enjoy one of the finest and most extensive systems of protected areas in the world.
As we near the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the Government of Canada invites Canadians to experience Canada’s remarkable natural heritage and rich history at national parks and national historic sites this summer.
Quick facts
- Two new “VIP Excursions”:
- “Le bal des oiseaux”: Meet the winged creatures inhabiting Forillon’s seashore and forests. This three-hour activity is offered June 5, 18 and 25. (Reservations required - 10 participants maximum.)
- “Pagaie au clair de lune” (Moonlight stand-up paddleboarding): Have yourself a blast exploring Penouille’s marine environment on an illuminated stand-up paddle board, in collaboration with Écorécréo. This two-hour activity includes equipment rental and accompaniment by a certified guide and a highly enthusiastic interpreter. This activity is open to all and will be offered six times between July 17 and August 7. (Reservations required - 6 participants maximum.)
- New historical interpretation activity:
- “Pêcheurs unissez-vous!” (Fishers unite!): Visitors at Grande-Grave will be invited to take part in an uprising staged by fishers who are demanding a better price for their fish from the Hyman Company.
- New talk:
- “Forillon sous les étoiles” (Forillon under the stars): Since Forillon National Park is shielded from light pollution, it is a place of choice to come admire the starry marvels of the night sky.
- New campfire storytelling activity:
- Emboldened by the success of the new storytelling activities launched last year, Forillon will be adding a third traditional tale to its “Evenings get lively at Forillon” series this summer (in French).
- Recreational activities at Penouille
- Écorécréo: Following on the recent introduction of Segways, Forillon will be offering visitors two new rental options – i.e., electric scooters and sit-on-top kayaks (solo and tandem).
- Two new areas dedicated to kitesurfing. Gaspé Bay offers aficionados ideal conditions for enjoying their sport. In order to provide an appropriate, supervised area for kitesurfing, two “priority use” areas have been set aside. Welcome kitesurfers!
