2016 British Columbia Announcement

Backgrounder

Grand total investment*: $38.8 M

Fort Langley National Historic Site

Fort Langley National Historic Site stands on a small knoll on the south bank of the Fraser River, in the exact location where the Hudson's Bay Company established a small post to trade with the First Nations of the West Coast. This enterprise grew, evolved, and influenced history, leading to the creation of the colony of British Columbia.

Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site

Perched on a wharf and piling structure over the South Arm of the Fraser River, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a commanding structure in the village of Steveston; a small community in Richmond, British Columbia. This historic site commemorates Canada's West Coast fishing industry, having been used as a cannery, reduction plant, and net loft, with buildings constructed between 1894 and 1964.

Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site

Located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in the West Shore area of Victoria, Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site commemorates the national historic significance of the Victoria-Esquimalt coast artillery fortifications. From 1878 to 1956, this fortress guarded Victoria and the naval base at Esquimalt harbour, as part of the larger defence strategy of the British Empire and Canada.

Pacific Rim National Park Reserve

Backed by the Vancouver Island Mountain Range and facing the open Pacific Ocean, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve protects and presents the rich natural and cultural heritage of Canada's West Coast. The cool and wet maritime climate produces an abundance of life in the water and on land. Lush coastal temperate rainforest gives way to bountiful and diverse intertidal and sub tidal areas. These natural wonders are interwoven with the long and dynamic history of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations, and European explorers and settlers.
