Calling all birders! Join the annual Christmas Bird Count in Grasslands National Park
News Release
December 12, 2016 Grasslands National Park Parks Canada Agency
Parks Canada is looking for volunteers to participate in Nature Saskatchewan’s Annual Christmas Bird Count which will be held on December 16th, 2016 at Grasslands National Park. In managing national parks, Parks Canada maintains or restores ecological integrity, and provides Canadians with opportunities to discover and enjoy them.
Started in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count is North America's longest-running citizen science project. Bird counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. Information collected by thousands of volunteers forms one of the world's largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess population trends and bird distribution.
Orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Senior Center in the Village of Val Marie followed by hot chocolate and snacks. Volunteers will then be separated into small groups led by Parks Canada Resource Conservation staff and will travel by vehicle along one of five routes within Grasslands National Park to look for birds and mammals. Once the route is done, volunteers will meet back at the Senior Centre for a meal provided by Parks Canada followed by a special presentation.
Providing innovative programs and volunteer activities allows more Canadians, including youth and newcomers, to experience the outdoors and learn about our environment and history.
If you are interested in participating in this volunteer activity or would like additional information, please contact Danielle Grant, Projects Communication Officer at 306-298-2353 or by email danielle.grant@pc.gc.ca.
