Parks Canada kicks-off Canada 150 celebrations at Green Gables Heritage Place!

Starting on May 1, 2017 Green Gables Heritage Place will begin welcoming visitors for the 2017 season.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Government is very pleased to offer free admission to all Parks Canada places in 2017. The FREE Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass provides unlimited opportunities to enjoy national parks, historic sites and marine conservation areas across the country.

Green Gables Heritage Place will be open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1st until October 31st and the house, grounds, trails, and gardens will remain accessible throughout the season. During peak season between July 1st and Labour Day Green Gables will offer daily interpretive programs and activities such as guided walks, story time, and ceilidhs.  On July 8th, Parks Canada is hosting National Historic Sites Day across the country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of national historic sites and a special event will take place at Green Gables.

To ensure the best possible experience, visitors are encouraged to plan their visit ahead of time through the Parks Canada website.

The FREE Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass is available from the Parks Canada website as well as at Parks Canada entry gates and visitor centres. Partners such as Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and CIBC will also be distributing passes for Parks Canada.

Quick Facts

  • Green Gables is the setting for the 1908 novel Anne of Green Gables. The original green-gabled farmhouse, which inspired author Lucy Maud Montgomery more than a century ago along with the surrounding landscape, has been carefully restored to reflect the period described in the novel.

  • Green Gables Heritage Place will receive $9.5 M in infrastructure funding over three years to support its redevelopment. Construction work has begun and will continue through the summers of 2017 and 2018. The project will be complete in June 2019.

  • As part of the centennial of national historic sites, Parks Canada invites Canadians to be inspired and captivated by the stories of the people and events that shaped the Canada of today.

  • Improvements to historic sites, such as Green Gables Heritage Place, enable Parks Canada to continue sharing the rich and varied heritage of our nation and provide an opportunity for Canadians to learn more about our diverse history.
