Today, Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada recognized the national historic significance of Christ Church Cathedral. A special ceremony was held at the cathedral with representatives of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and Christ Church Cathedral in attendance.

The Government of Canada is committed to connecting Canadians to the significant events that contributed to our country’s rich history and heritage. Built between 1857 and1860, Christ Church Cathedral is an excellent example of a neo‑Gothic cathedral in Canada. The church reflects the Anglican ideal of the period, i.e. a return to the English Church of the Middle Ages in liturgy and architecture.

The cathedral is an outstanding, prominent focal point in downtown Montreal. Its location played a pivotal role in the expansion of Montreal towards the north-west and in the transformation of Saint Catherine Street into a main commercial artery of the city.

As part of the centennial of national historic sites, Parks Canada invites Canadians to discover and be inspired and captivated by the stories of the people and events that shaped the Canada of today. Canada’s national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas enable Canadians to experience their rich history and heritage in a special way and will play a big part in the celebration of Canada 150.
