National parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas represent the very best that Canada has to offer and tell stories of who we are, including the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is pleased to welcome visitors to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation on Saturday, July 1st, with a variety of special activities, a Citizenship Ceremony, and some Canada Day cake!

Canada Day activities begin at 11:30 a.m. with music by the Stadacona Band and a choir from the Nova Scotia Tattoo. The official opening ceremony begins at noon but come early to catch the noon gun and a 21-gun salute in honour of our country’s anniversary. Following the ceremony, Canada Day cake will be served as you tour the grounds and watch the 78th Highlander Infantry Pipes and Drums perform a demonstration of mid-Victorian foot and arms drill. At 1:15 p.m., a band from the Chilean Navy Training Ship Esmeralda will put on a show. And don’t miss Parka, Parks Canada’s beaver mascot who will be making special appearances throughout the day!

In celebration of Canada 150, we are honoured to co-host a Canada Day Community Citizenship ceremony with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. Join us at 3:30 p.m. to reaffirm your citizenship, join local singer Peter Baylis as he performs O Canada for the 150th time this year, and celebrate Canada Day with Canada’s newest citizens!

As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Government is very pleased to offer free admission to all Parks Canada places in 2017. Canada’s national parks and historic sites enable Canadians to experience their rich history and heritage in a special way and will play a big part in the celebration of Canada 150.

To ensure the best possible experience, visitors are encouraged to plan their visit ahead of time through the Parks Canada website or download the new FREE Parks Canada app.
