Lachine Canal National Historic Site

Built in 1825 to bypass the Lachine Rapids, the Lachine Canal National Historic Site runs 14.5 km between Montréal’s Old Port and Lake Saint-Louis. The gateway to a network of canals linking the Atlantic to the heart of the continent, the Lachine Canal paved the way for the urbanization of the southwest part of the Island of Montréal. Much more than an inland waterway, the canal is also an accessible urban park with a surprisingly rich history. Each year, more than a million visitors enjoy the banks of the Lachine Canal. Canal activities and facilities provide an opportunity to explore the history of this industrialization and navigation landmark, while enjoying a unique urban setting.

Project name:
Improvements to the lighting system

Estimated total: $9.3M

Project description: Improvements to the lighting system along the Lachine Canal’s path will ensure its reliability and increase the level of safety for the numerous users in this highly urban environment.

The replacement of the underground lighting distribution system and more than 400 lampposts will also reduce energy bills and contribute to the sound environmental management of the site. The new lighting fixture models chosen for the lampposts are 3,000 Kelvin light-emitting diode lighting fixtures, selected based on comfort, health and safety.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, the work will span a period of three years and be planned in collaboration with local stakeholders to minimize the impact on the users of the canal’s path. All necessary measures will be taken during the installation of the lighting system to ensure the safety of all the users of the Lachine Canal.
