Parks Canada and Confederation Centre of the Arts are pleased to announce the winners of the 2017 My Community, My Canada Contest. Participants were asked to choose an important person in their community and create a project to capture this person’s contributions to the makeup and vision of their ideal Canada. Through contests such as My Community, My Canada Parks Canada and Confederation Centre of the Arts are fulfilling their shared mandate to bring to life the story of the founding of Canada through engaging youth to learn about and experience our cultural history.
The winner of the Group Prize was Mrs. Matheson’s grade 6 class from Southern Kings Consolidated for their project depicting their hardworking community, and how a well-connected community makes the world go round. Skye MacNeill, a grade 6 student also from Southern Kings Consolidated, took home first place for her project about her community's loving and caring attitudes towards one another and how this affects her. In second place is Grace Yeo, a grade 8 student from Stonepark Intermediate School, who created a hand sketched drawing of Canadian sports. Ellie Conohan, also a grade 8 student from Stonepark Intermediate, captured third place with a layered collage about the “true north strong and free”.
The winning individual projects and group project were displayed at Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown on June 9 and 10 and are on the Province House National Historic Site website. The winning class received a special drawing class with Island artist Maurice Bernard, and a trip to the Story of Confederation program at Confederation Centre of the Arts for a tour with a Confederation Player. Individual winners received prize packages from Parks Canada and the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Canada’s national parks and national historic sites enable Canadians to experience their rich history and heritage in a special way and are playing a big part in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation. We encourage Canadians to learn more about their heritage by participating in contests like this and visiting the Story of Confederation Program to learn more about Province House, Confederation, and the Charlottetown Conference of 1864 that helped shape the future of Canada.
