Parks Canada Kicks off Canada 150 Celebrations at Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site

Starting on June 17, Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site will begin welcoming visitors for the 2017 season. 

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, the Government is very pleased to offer free admission to all Parks Canada places in 2017. The FREE Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass provides unlimited opportunities to enjoy national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas across the country. 

Canada’s historic sites will play a big part in the celebration of Canada 150. At Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site, rich and diverse programming awaits visitors. 

On June 21, Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site is proud to take part in National Aboriginal Day celebrations by welcoming the pow wow organized by Timiskaming First Nation of Notre-Dame-Du-Nord. This collaboration with First Nations will continue with a series of Algonquin-themed workshops starting on July 29th and the activity Kodjipidjiken, Samples of Algonquin Delicacies on August 19. Parks Canada is proud to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ contributions, history, cultures and special connection with the land. 

Visitors will have the opportunity to join in Canada Day festivities on July 1st with special activities, workshops, music, cake and tea tasting, and the handing out of tattoos and surprise gifts, as well as the launch of the exhibition Parkas de poils by artist Michel Villeneuve. And finally, on July 22th, in association with Les Amis du Vieux-Fort, the summer festival will feature costumed-interpreters and re-enactments, a picnic, a cider tasting activity, as well as carriage rides and rabaska canoe expeditions. 

For more details on offered experiences and hours of operation, visitors are encouraged to plan their visit ahead of time through the Parks Canada’s website to ensure the best possible experience. 

The FREE Parks Canada 2017 Discovery Pass is available from the Parks Canada Website as well as at Parks Canada entry gates and visitor centres. Partners such as Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) and CIBC are also distributing passes for Parks Canada. 

Please note that only admission is free for 2017. There are fees for enhanced interpretative programs.

Quick Facts

  • Fort Témiscamingue National Historic Site is open from June 17th to September 4th, every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • The site also features an interactive indoor exhibit presenting the site’s history, its aboriginal origins and the region’s commercial activities in the 18th and 19th centuries.

  • Visitors are also invited to discover the outdoor exhibit Murmures and the film The Voyageurs.
