Parks Canada invites residents and visitors in Chambly and the surrounding areas to a festive event to celebrate the completion of work on the Place des Barges, along the Chambly Canal National Historic Site. The event will be held on Wednesday, August 9th, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Place des Barges, located at the corner of Mauricie and Migneault streets in Chambly.

Place des Barges was recently upgraded as part of a rehabilitation project on the space formerly known as “Parc Migneault” located upstream of Chambly Canal’s Locks Nos. 1-2-3, near Bourgogne Avenue. This work was funded through Parks Canada’s unprecedented $3 billion federal infrastructure investment program.

Several activities are planned as part of this celebration, including airbrush tattoos, a BioBlitz game station, the presence of the very popular mascot Parka and plenty of fun for young and old alike! Parks Canada’s staff will be on-hand to share information and updates on the work that has taken place at the site, as well as other infrastructure project occurring along the Chambly Canal. This event will be a great way to start the evening that will later continue with the Dominique Hudson show at Parc des Ateliers, as part of the "Sur un air de Chambly" series of outdoors shows.

Investments in visitor infrastructure – such as trails, day use areas, and campgrounds, as well as highways, parkways, and bridges – will ensure the quality and reliability of visitor facilities and continue to allow Canadians to connect with nature. These infrastructure investments are vital to creating middle class jobs and sustained economic growth.

Quick Facts

  • Located on the left bank of the Richelieu River southeast of Montreal, the Chambly Canal stretches nearly 20 kilometres between the municipalities of Chambly and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. • In 2017, Parks Canada is celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation by offering free admission to its national parks, historic sites, and marine conservation areas. These special places enable Canadians to experience their rich history and heritage in a special way and play a big part in the celebration of Canada150.

  • Parks Canada is investing an unprecedented $3 billion dollars over five years to support infrastructure work to heritage, tourism, waterway, and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks, and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
