Batoche National Historic Site - 2017 Infrastructure Investment Project Completion
Backgrounder
Batoche National Historic Site
Batoche National Historic Site commemorates the history of the Métis community of Batoche: home of Métis culture and heritage as well as the events surrounding the armed conflict between the Canadian government and the Métis provisional government in 1885. The site also commemorates the River Lot system, portions of the Carlton Trail, and the roles of the First Nations in the 1885 Northwest Resistance.
Federal Infrastructure Project Completion
Batoche National Historic Site received $1.4 million in infrastructure investment funding as part of the Batoche Shared Management Visitor Experience Renewal. This funding aimed to create new infrastructure to improve the visitor experience in the East Village area of the historic site, as proposed by the Share Management Board.
As part of this infrastructure work, a new viewing platform and family garden has now been completed. This project will provide for increased Métis cultural interpretation and family gathering opportunities, in celebration of the local Métis culture.
Additional projects are underway, specific to the creation of new interpretive exhibits and trail walk interpretive programs. Currently in the development phase, Parks Canada is working closely with the Métis community on these project to advance engaging design and content ideas. Work on this portion of the investment projects is expected to begin in 2018.
