Parks Canada Invites the Public to Comment on the Chambly Canal National Historic Site Draft Management Plan

News Release

November 6, 2017                          Chambly, Quebec                    Parks Canada Agency

Parks Canada is pleased to invite the public to comment on the draft management plan for the Chambly Canal National Historic Site. Linking the cities of Chambly and Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the Chambly Canal is a nearly twenty kilometre long waterway with nine locks that enable boats to bypass the Richelieu River rapids.

The draft management plan replaces the previous version adopted in 2007. It includes key strategies and objectives for the management and operation of the national historic site over the next 10 years. Some of the proposals the public is invited to comment on include: preserving and presenting the heritage and the cultural landscapes of the Chambly Canal; promoting an improved and diversified visitor experience throughout the length of the Canal; and, making the Canal a source of pride that also brings benefits to the community.

The Fort-Sainte-Thérèse National Historic Site, located within the limits of the Chambly Canal National Historic Site on Fryer Island, is also included in the draft management plan. Among the objectives for the management of the site that will be discussed are: recognition and dissemination of its national historical significance, its protection and the presentation of its unique natural setting, its accessibility and the creation of new activities commemorating its history.

Today, Parks Canada is inviting visitors, residents of the surrounding municipalities, partners and organizations to participate in large numbers in the consultations for this proposed plan. Interested parties can consult a summary document of the plan and complete an online survey until December 3 at www.consultationscanal.ca.

An information session will be held on November 22, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Auberge Harris located at 576 Champlain Street, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

For more information on the proposed vision as well as the consultation activities, and to complete the online survey, we invite you to visit: www.consultationscanal.ca.
