News release
Prizes awarded to PEI students for projects highlighting Canada’s heritage
May 18, 2018 Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island Parks Canada
The Parks Canada Award and two specialty prizes were awarded to four Island students at the Provincial Heritage Fair held on May 3. The awards were presented to students who displayed exceptional projects on a national historic site on Prince Edward Island, or a person, place, or event of national historic significance.
Parks Canada specialty awards were presented to Jonathan Ndayegamiye, a Grade 6 student at Grace Christian School, for his project on Sir Frederick Banting, a Nobel Laureate and one of the discoverers of insulin, as well as to Ainsley Gaudet and Brianna Smith, Grade 7 students from Birchwood Intermediate School, for their project on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France.
The Parks Canada Award for the best heritage fair project portraying a person, place, or event of national historic significance was awarded to Alivia Carver, a Grade 6 student from Stratford Elementary School, for her project on the 1917 Halifax Explosion. Alivia’s project uncovered family connections to the tragic collision of two ships in the Halifax Harbour, one of which was loaded with explosives headed to the battlefields of the First World War.
