Government of Canada recognizes the National Historic Significance of the Introduction of Multilingual Multicultural Radio Stations in Canada

Mr. Arif Virani, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage (Multiculturalism) and Member of Parliament for Parkdale — High Park, will take part in a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the Introduction of Multilingual Multicultural Radio Stations in Canada as a national historic event.

In the 1960s, following requests from multilingual radio station owners, the Canadian government increased the amount of content in languages other than English or French allowed on the airways. Multilingual, multicultural radio broadcasting has helped newcomers adapt to life in Canada, while offering them a public voice and contributing to their cultural expression.Mr. Virani will make the announcement on behalf of the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna.
