Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site to Host Lock & Paddle Event for 3rd Year

June 20, 2018 Peterborough, Ontario Parks Canada
The third “Lock & Paddle” event is preparing to float its way back into Peterborough on Sunday, June 24th. This year, in celebration of National Canoe Day and Free Lockage Day, the Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site of Canada, in co-operation with The Canadian Canoe Museum and The Land Canadian Adventures, have set a new goal: to lock through as many paddlers as possible throughout the event.
Last year, 328 canoes and kayaks filled the two chambers - smashing our goal of 300 (150 in each chamber). This year we are opening up the site to encourage a “festival feel” by adding local vendors and entertainment as we welcome hundreds of paddlers and spectators. In order to better grow this spectacular event and give everyone a chance to participate, the format will change to make the event more inclusive, giving everyone the chance to lock-through.
At noon on Sunday, June 24th, the lockages will begin. To participate in this year’s Lock & Paddle, paddlers will need to register on-site beginning at 10:00 am where they will get a colour coded wristband. There will be two locations to register, one at the McFarlane Street Bridge parking lot and another on the west, bottom side of the Peterborough Lift Lock. Please make sure to arrive early to participate. For more information, please visit our website at https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/on/trentsevern/activ/eclusez-pagayez-lock-paddle.
Media will receive exclusive access to the Peterborough Lift Lock tower area for photos and videos. Please contact Karen Feeley, Public Relations and Communications Officer, to request your accreditation no later than 1:00 pm on Friday, June 22nd. Closed-toe shoes, a certified Personal Flotation Device, and valid media ID is mandatory. Access will only be granted to the tower area for those shooting for accredited media outlets. Please note that drones are not permitted, however, arrangements can be made for access to the official footage of the event. On the day of the event, please park at the Peterborough Lift Lock Visitors Center and report to Communications Assistant, Alyssa Cymbalista, outside the front doors of the Visitors Center for check-in and instructions.
