Chambly Canal National Historic Site
Located on the west bank of the Richelieu River, 20 kilometres southeast of Montreal, the Chambly Canal extends for about 20 kilometres between the municipalities of Saint‑Jean-sur-Richelieu and Chambly. A real oasis for cycling, boating and outdoor enthusiasts, the Chambly Canal offers moments of pure relaxation in an environment shaped by 175 years of history. In addition, eight locks (out of nine) and a bridge are still manually operated, as during the period when the Canal opened in 1843.
In 2017, nearly 260,000 people travelled along the Canal’s banks and 1,700 boats went through the locks.
Federal Infrastructure Project Funding
Project name: Chambly Canal – Rebuilding of the Chambly Wharf
Estimated total funding: $9.7M
Project description: Reconstruction of the Chambly Wharf will make the facility accessible to the public again. Access to the Wharf has been prohibited since the structure was damaged by floods in 2011.
This project will also help to enhance the visitor experience for users of the Chambly Canal National Historic Site, who will able again to stroll on the Wharf and admire the magnificent landscape of the Chambly Basin.
The work is scheduled to begin in October 2018 and continue until the spring of 2020.
