Fort Lennox National Historic Site

Fort Lennox is a British fortification whose historic buildings were built between 1819 and 1829. The investments are designed to allow Canadians to continue enjoying our rich history and heritage and to preserve this irreplaceable site for future generations.

Six buildings on-site will undergo simultaneous restoration, including five within the fortified enclosure, namely the barracks, the officer’s quarters, the guardhouse, and the two stone magazines. These multiple projects will require a significant number of workers and machinery on the island.

Federal Infrastructure Project Funding

Project name: Security and restoration of the barracks

Project Funding Estimate: $ 7.9M

Project description: The project, which aims to strengthen and restore the barracks’ main building as well as upgrade the reception centre infrastructure, will allow us to offer improved services to visitors at Fort Lennox National Historic Site.

The project also aims to preserve the barracks’ architectural integrity and to address current structural issues, such as land subsidence and water infiltration, to extend the lifespan of the building and halt its deterioration.

Due to ongoing major restoration work underway at the historical buildings of Fort Lennox National Historic Site on Île aux Noix, the site is currently closed and will remain closed in 2019.

A short video explaining the various steps involved in the barracks’ restoration is available on the Fort Lennox National Historic Site website: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/qc/lennox/visit/infrastructure.
