Projects: Road and roof rehabilitation, and lighting and parking lot improvements

Federal investment: $1.5 million

Funding program: Federal Infrastructure Investment

Projects’ description: The infrastructure projects at Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site include repairs to the lower roof terrace, upgrades to the parking lot asphalt and curbs, and new exterior lighting in the walkways and the parking lots.

The roofing work is taking place specifically on the lower rooftop terrace area. The current rock and concrete aggregate pavers will be removed and replaced, while additional general repair work will be conducted. This work began in the early fall and will be completed by the end of January 2019. Once completed, this area will be the perfect location for visitors to take in the panoramic views of the Bras d’Or Lake.

Improvements have been made to the road surface, access to the site, as well as the parking areas. The exterior walkway and parking lot lighting will also be updated. This new lighting system will increase visitor safety for evening events, ensuring the walkways and parking lots are well lit, allowing for the possibility of more enhanced visitor experience in the evening hours.

The contracts for this work have been awarded to two local companies, Municipal Ready-Mix Ltd. and Joneljim Concrete Construction. These important infrastructure projects will contribute to a safe, high-quality experience for visitors, ensuring the conservation of Canada’s built heritage, while stimulating the economy by working with local contractors on Cape Breton Island.
