Niagara National Historic Sites Management Plan Tabled in Parliament
News release
Parks Canada announces plan to connect Canadians to heritage in Niagara-on-the-Lake
December 14, 2018 Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario Parks Canada Agency
The management plan for the Niagara National Historic Sites was tabled in Parliament recently. Reviewed every 10 years, management plans are a legislative requirement of the Canada National Parks Act and guide the management of Parks Canada’s places.
National historic sites reflect the rich and varied heritage of our nation.
The new plan for the Niagara National Historic Sites outlines the following key strategies:
· Conserving Niagara’s Cultural Heritage by integrating cultural resource management with experiences that captivate visitors and contribute to the stewardship of the sites’ cultural resources.
· Empowering Indigenous Voices by inviting open dialogue with local and regional Indigenous peoples to better understand their needs and interests in the Niagara National Historic Sites and how Indigenous culture can be shared with visitors and Canadians.
· Establishing Niagara National Historic Sites as a premier cultural heritage destination and a leading provider of heritage experiences in the Niagara Region, where visitors can experience and learn about stories that lead to the formation of Canada.
The plan was developed through public consultation and based on input from local residents and organizations, visitors, stakeholders, partners and Indigenous communities of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Through this management plan, Parks Canada is meeting its promise to protect and present Canada’s cultural heritage while also providing an opportunity for Canadians to experience and discover our diverse history in new and exciting ways.
In 2018 and beyond, the Government of Canada is celebrating families with free admission to all Parks Canada’s places for youth 17 and under. Parks Canada’s national heritage places are a great way for Canadians to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment and heritage.
