June 13, 2019                          Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec                        Parks Canada Agency

Whether you’re looking for adventure, fun science activities for the whole family, a chance to explore history, or a break from the everyday, Parks Canada has 450 000 km² of protected areas with countless unique experiences to suit your needs.

Starting June 22, the Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site will officially open for the 2019 visitor season. New this year, Parks Canada Learn-to Camp activity will be offered at the site. It is an opportunity for new campers to learn the basics and how to plan and enjoy safe camping trips. The overnight Learn-to Camp activity will take place on July 27-28. Camping equipment is included – participants only need to bring a sleeping bag. Participants will learn the basics of camping including how to set up a tent and safely start a campfire. A unique opportunity to spend the night under the stars in a beautiful natural setting, along the St. Lawrence River. To reserve your spot for this activity, please visit the Parks Canada website.

As of this year, access to the site, including the interpretation centre and octagonal blockhouse, will be free for everyone. However, guided tours will cost $7.30 per adult.

At the Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site, visitors can watch history come to life thanks to an archeological landscape that lets them imagine the life of soldiers at the garrison at the beginning of the 19th century. With a history spanning 7,000 years, the site was a portage and encampment location used by Indigenous peoples to avoid the rapids, a military fortification, and a canal that opened the way for commercial shipping. Take advantage of the beautiful scenery to have a picnic! Plan your visit today and hear stories of the events that have shaped Canada’s past, present and future!

Parks Canada places belong to all Canadians. That is why the Government of Canada is pleased to continue to offer free admission to all Parks Canada’s places for youth aged 17 and under. By encouraging young people to discover nature and connect with history, we can help to inspire the next generation of stewards for these protected places.

Parks Canada staff at Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site are excited to welcome new and returning guests to experience everything that the site has to offer.
