Statement from Parks Canada on Signal Hill National Historic Site

Statement

Signal Hill National Historic Site is an iconic Canadian location – and a special place for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

We have clearly heard the concerns about the new fence along a portion of the performance field at Signal Hill. While the fence was intended to address safety concerns and improve the experience for visitors during the Signal Hill Tattoo and other performances, the current solution clearly missed the mark.

In response to the feedback we have received, Parks Canada will aim to achieve those objectives in a way that does not block the incredible view from Signal Hill. The existing fence will be taken down this week and replaced with a temporary structure that will only be put in place during performances. This approach will help keep visitors safe and avoid traffic issues while preserving the view.

Parks Canada places belong to all Canadians and we appreciate the community’s engagement on this issue and their passion for Signal Hill.

Quote:

“I love seeing how much people care about Signal Hill and our national parks and historic sites. While visitor safety is a top priority for Parks Canada, we have heard loud and clear that the design and placement of this fence missed the mark, and it will be taken down by the end of the week. We will make sure that any measures we take to improve safety at Signal Hill and provide a better visitor experience during performances also preserve the spectacular view and are consistent with the character of the site.”

Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada
