New Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada Member

Backgrounder

On August 15, 2019, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna, announced the appointment of a distinguished Canadian to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC).

David Neufeld, Yukon

For over 25 years, Mr. David Neufeld was Parks Canada’s Yukon and Western Arctic historian. His main work with Yukon First Nation and Inuvialuit governments focused on national parks and national historic sites in their traditional territories and resulted in the designation of several Indigenous national historic sites in Yukon. He served on the Board of Governors for Yukon College for eight years, later lecturing on northern history. Mr. Neufeld currently sits on the College’s Research Ethics Board as the community representative. He has co-authored two best-selling Yukon history books and continues to study Yukon First Nation issues and environmental history. His 2013 art installation “The Landing” garnered positive peer attention. Mr. Neufeld holds an Honours B.A. in history from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s degree in Canadian history from Western University.

Mr. Neufeld’s appointment to the HSMBC was effective as of June 2, 2019.
