August 16, 2019                                St. John’s, NL                             Parks Canada Agency

The management plan for Terra Nova National Park was tabled in Parliament recently. Reviewed every 10 years, management plans are a legislative requirement of the Canada National Parks Act and guide the management of Parks Canada places.

Canada’s national parks are gateways to nature, adventure, and discovery.

The new plan for Terra Nova National Park outlines the following key objectives:

· Advance collaboration with Indigenous partners, the research community and stakeholders in ecosystem management and restoration initiatives for the park.

· Connect visitors to the unique stories and history of the park through respectful relationships with Indigenous and local communities.

· Provide visitors with opportunities to connect to the natural and cultural environment of the park during all seasons through the development of diverse and unique visitor experiences.

· Ensure park management decisions are informed by climate change research and that adaptation measures are implemented accordingly to reduce existing and potential climate change risks.

The plan was developed through public consultation and based on input from local residents and organizations, visitors, stakeholders, partners and Indigenous communities of Newfoundland and Labrador including Miawpukek First Nation and Qalipu First Nation. Through this management plan, Parks Canada is meeting its promise to protect and present Canada’s natural heritage while also providing an opportunity for Canadians to experience and discover our environment in new and exciting ways.

Continuing in 2019 and beyond, the Government of Canada is celebrating families with free admission to all Parks Canada’s places for youth 17 and under. Parks Canada’s national heritage places are a great way for Canadians to experience the outdoors and learn more about our environment and heritage.
