Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada are commemorating the national historic significance of Larry Gains (1900 – 1983).

Larry Gains was one of the most talented boxers in the first half of the twentieth century, and his career was impacted by the racial barriers upheld in the sport during his career. As we commemorate Larry Gains’ achievements, we can better understand the challenges faced by black boxers and other athletes who have had to contend with additional hurdles due to racial discrimination throughout history.
