Permafrost coastal changes in the western Kitikmeot

Permafrost coastal changes in the western Kitikmeot

Date and location

Thursday, July 27, 2023 from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS)

Continuous shuttle between CHARS and the high school starting at 3:20 PM

Topic

Permafrost coastal regions are undergoing significant changes because of the complex interplay between climate change, rising sea levels, storm-surge flooding, thawing permafrost, and sea ice decline. Understanding the rates and causes of coastal change in Nunavut is needed to assess how arctic coastlines are going to change in response to climate change, especially around communities. The aim of this research project is to provide a quantitative analysis of shoreline evolution and hydrodynamic conditions, in the context of a changing climate while developing local capacity for coastal monitoring in the Arctic.

This project is funded by the Climate Change Preparedness in the North (CCPN) Program and a team of scientists at the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and Polar Knowledge Canada in close partnership with the Hunters and Trappers Organizations in Cambridge Bay and Kugluktuk intend to implement it.

Talks will feature:

  • David Didier, professor in Coastal Geomorphology, Université du Québec à Rimouski
  • Stéphanie Coulombe, Permafrost scientist, Polar Knowledge Canada
