  • Since coming into force in June 2015, Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) has launched a Canada-wide staffing process for a range of positions in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. These include jobs in office support, environmental science and technology, research and technical positions.
  • In January POLAR partnered with the University of Victoria and Ocean Networks Canada to convene a workshop on the ocean/climate nexus and explore the global and domestic context, approaches to, and gaps in research.
  • POLAR scientists, their science colleagues and Inuit students are now processing the findings of a third field season of research into lake ecology, insect monitoring and observations of the flowering dates of Arctic undra plants as sensitive indicators of climate change.

  • POLAR will collaborate with northern communities and housing experts to address regional needs following a workshop in Ottawa in February. POLAR partnered with the National Research Council, Natural Resources Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to bridge knowledge gaps in housing in the North. Approximately 45 experts, stakeholders and community representatives participated.
  • The Office of the Governor General of Canada is seeking nominations for its Polar Medal. This new medal celebrates Canada’s northern heritage and recognizes people who render extraordinary services in the polar regions.   • Angut Pederson, David Leblanc and Dwayne Beattie flew the POLAR colours at the 2016 Kitikmeot Trade Show in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in February.

In late October Angut Pederson transited the Northwest Passage as a guest aboard the Finnish icebreaker MSV Fennica, owned by Arctia Shipping of Helsinki. He contributed knowledge of arctic conditions and wildlife to the voyage, and made excellent connections for POLAR with the scientists and others on board.
