Meet Jess Borys, Communications Advisor at PrairiesCan

For the past year, Jess Borys has been bringing PrairiesCan’s stories to life as a Communications Advisor in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her role is about making sure the work PrairiesCan does—supporting entrepreneurs, businesses, industries, and communities—reaches the right audiences in an engaging and meaningful way. “One moment, I might be drafting a news release or speaking points, organizing a funding announcement, and the next, I’m working with colleagues on a communications strategy for an exciting new initiative,” she shares. No two days are the same, but that’s what Jess loves about the job. “It’s a fast-paced role that keeps me on my toes, and I love being able to highlight the incredible impact PrairiesCan has across the region.”

A passion for economic development

Jess’s path to public service began at the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, where she saw firsthand how collaboration and community-building drive economic growth. “That experience sparked my interest in economic development and public service,” she explains. She was drawn to PrairiesCan for the opportunity to support not just businesses, but entire communities, industries, and organizations across the Prairies. “Moving into government felt like a natural next step, allowing me to contribute to initiatives that promote growth, resilience, and innovation in a way that benefits people and communities as a whole,” she says.

Jess sees PrairiesCan as a key player in strengthening local economies across the Prairies. “Our work helps create jobs, boost industries, and ensure that even rural and remote communities have the resources they need to thrive,” she explains.

A memorable project: Revitalizing downtown Winnipeg

One of the most rewarding projects Jess has worked on is supporting PrairiesCan’s initiatives that focus on revitalizing downtown Winnipeg. “Seeing the direct impact of our investments has been incredibly fulfilling,” she shares. As cities across the Prairies work to rebuild after the challenges the pandemic brought, Jess is proud to help showcase the positive changes happening in her community. “Downtowns are the heart of any city, and it’s inspiring to see new energy, collaboration, and investment coming together to create a more vibrant and resilient core.”

Jess’ career advice

For those looking to build a career in public service, Jess emphasizes the importance of networking. “Relationships are key in government work, as collaboration across teams and departments is crucial,” she advises. She also encourages curiosity and flexibility: “Be open to trying new things! Economic development is such a broad field, and you never know where your skills and interests might take you.”

Looking to the future: sustainability in economic development

One trend Jess is particularly excited about is the growing emphasis on sustainability in economic development. “More businesses, organizations, and communities are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, and it’s encouraging to see government programs evolving to support that transition,” she says. She’s proud to see PrairiesCan investing in clean energy, sustainable infrastructure, and climate-resilient projects, knowing that these efforts are shaping the long-term success of the Prairies.

What Jess loves about PrairiesCan

For Jess, it’s all about the people. “Everyone here is not only passionate about the work they do, but also genuinely cares about each other as individuals,” she shares. She also appreciates her dynamic, close-knit team. “Our communications team may be small, but we’re mighty, and I love that we get to collaborate with colleagues across the region every day.”

Jess, beyond the office

Outside of work, Jess enjoys exploring Manitoba’s beautiful trails and parks with her husband, Will, and their dog, Finn. “I’m also an avid reader, a big football and hockey fan, and I cherish any time spent with family and friends,” she says. Lately, she’s been enjoying a new way to unwind: “I’ve gotten into colouring to relax—I pair it with an audiobook, and it’s been a great way to unwind. Highly recommend!”

Jess’s ability to tell the stories of PrairiesCan’s impact makes her an invaluable member of the team. Whether she’s crafting key messages, coordinating events, or showcasing success stories, her work helps bring PrairiesCan’s mission to life across the region.
