Billie’s path to PrairiesCan

Billie’s journey to the Government of Canada was influenced by her academic background in political studies and her experience in the not-for-profit sector. “A public policy course during my time at university captivated my interest and ignited a desire to deepen my knowledge in this area,” she explains. This passion led her to seek a position within the government, and through networking, she landed at PrairiesCan. Reflecting on her career path, Billie shares, “I have honed my skills, learned about policy analysis, and cultivated an understanding of how government initiatives impact economic development in Saskatchewan. This journey has reinforced my commitment to contributing positively to public policy and governance.”

Billie ’s favourite aspect of working at PrairiesCan

For Billie, the best part about PrairiesCan is the supportive community. “My favorite thing about working at PrairiesCan is the people who are always there to cheer you on and help you grow. They have given me advice, presented learning opportunities, and have pushed me to develop my skills,” she says. “Even when I’m having a tough workday, they seem to know when to uplift me and recognize my efforts.”

A standout initiative at PrairiesCan

One of Billie’s most memorable projects was a tour of multiple federal deputy ministers hosted by PrairiesCan in Saskatoon in May 2023. This event brought together federal and provincial counterparts to explore various projects and engage with stakeholders. Billie played a key role in managing logistics and bookings, coordinating with administrative teams and local businesses. She recalls, “Navigating the approval procedures, completing necessary forms, and communicating effectively with numerous contacts within a tight timeline presented significant challenges.” Reflecting on the ultimate success of the event, she adds that it was deeply rewarding to witness the trip achieve its hefty objectives. “It was particularly fulfilling to witness our administrative efforts extend beyond the office environment, playing a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless agenda and itinerary for the event. Seeing our work contribute directly to such a successful outcome underscored the importance of effective administrative support in facilitating impactful government initiatives.”

Public service career advice

Billie emphasizes the importance of patience when navigating the system to land a job in the federal public service. “The hiring process can be lengthy, so take each step methodically and familiarize yourself with the requirements,” she advises. Additionally, she encourages continuous learning and growth: “Your knowledge and experience are the most valuable assets in your career. Never stop learning and growing!”

Billie, beyond the office

Outside of work, Billie finds joy in spending quality time with her friends and family. As a self-proclaimed foodie, Billie loves exploring local restaurants in Saskatoon and indulging in treats like ice cream, croissants, and a good iced coffee. The outdoors also plays an important role in her life. “Being surrounded by nature, tending to my plants, and loving my dog help me to stay grounded,” Billie explains. When relaxing at home, she appreciates a good TV show or movie, and adds, “You can often catch me re-watching one of my favourites!”
