Employee spotlight – Kate Hart

A thumbnail selfie photo of Kate Hart, taken in an outdoor wooded setting with Fall leaves on the ground, accompanied by the following text: “Employee spotlight”; “Kate Hart, Senior Communications Advisor”; and the following call-out quote: “The best part is being able to work with so many different people across the department, learning about these different roles and finding that in this department there are few or no barriers, everyone works together and listens to everyone irrespective of your job title or role. That is amazing.”

Meet Kate Hart, Senior Strategic Communications Advisor at PrairiesCan

Kate joined PrairiesCan’s Communications team in the Ottawa office February 2022 as a Senior Strategic Communication Advisor. Kate describes her role as multifaceted and dynamic. A typical day for her involves liaising with various offices, managing communications for announcements, and coordinating with the Minister’s office. Her wealth of experience from time working in the private sector and the various roles and responsibilities she has held across 12 different federal departments have given her the ability to effectively and meaningfully contribute to PrairiesCan’s mission.

A memorable project for Kate

A standout initiative for Kate at PrairiesCan has been her work on the ‘Building a Green Prairie Economy’ project. “I have been part of the team that has worked on this from getting the Building a Green Prairie Economy Act through Parliament, to Royal Assent, to the public consultation processes done in 2023, and now to implementing the Framework to Build a Green Prairie Economy. It has been a lot of fun and hard work.”

Reflecting on her experience in working with her team members on this project, she adds, “the best part is being able to work with so many different people across the department, learning about these different roles and finding that in this department there are few or no barriers, everyone works together and listens to everyone irrespective of your job title or role. That is amazing. This place is like a family of people who care and support one another.”

Kate’s career advice

For those considering a career in the Government of Canada, especially in economic development, Kate advises, “join because you really love Canadians and want to make a difference.” She emphasizes the importance of passion and suggests, “if you are a person with private sector ideologies, I would say working in the Economic Development space is a good choice and a nice balance between private sector and public service ideologies.”

Kate’s thoughts on economic development

Kate believes that PrairiesCan’s efforts are important in enhancing economic opportunities across the Prairie Provinces. She affirms, “PrairiesCan’s mandate is to grow and develop economic opportunities across the Prairies and from what I have seen in my two years here, we are doing that. And, if you have a strong economic powerhouse region like the Prairie Provinces doing well, then that will inevitably support a strong economy for Canada.”

Kate’s favorite aspect of working at PrairiesCan

When asked about her favorite aspect of working at PrairiesCan, Kate’s response is heartfelt: “PrairiesCan is like a family of people who care and support you, your success and well-being.”

Kate, beyond the office

Outside of her professional life, Kate enjoys nature walks, a pastime that allows her to unwind, let her mind wander, and connect with others—humans and their dogs alike. This simple pleasure, she notes, is a “great gift” in her life.
