OTTAWA, April 5, 2016 – Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement following an on-duty incident that led to the death of Vancouver Island RCMP Constable Beckett:

“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of RCMP Constable Sarah Beckett, who was killed in an on-duty auto collision this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

The death of a police officer is a stark reminder of the sacrifices and bravery of our police women and men who put themselves in harm's way each and every day to keep our communities safe.

Commissioner Paulson has extended the RCMP’s full support to Constable Beckett’s family, and also to RCMP personnel as they grieve the tragic loss of their colleague.

The RCMP takes the safety and security of its members very seriously. An investigation into this incident is underway and information will be shared as it becomes available.”
