Statement by the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, on the establishment of the Canada-U.S. Redress Working Group

OTTAWA, May 10, 2016 - Today, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement on the establishment of the Canada-U.S. Redress Working Group:

“On March 10, 2016, during the State Visit in Washington, D.C., Canada and the United States agreed to establish, within 60 days, a working group on issues related to Canadian and U.S. travellers who experience difficulties with aviation security lists (Canada’s Secure Air Travel Act list under the Passenger Protect Program, and the U.S. No Fly List).

Today, I am pleased to announce that we have delivered on the commitment made by Prime Minister Trudeau and that the Canada-U.S. Redress Working Group is now in place.

The bilateral working group provides a means for government officials to communicate and will help ensure the availability of the most accurate information to protect the shared transportation and national security interests of both countries, while minimizing any negative impact on the traveling public.

Canada is focused on resolving issues experienced by Canadian travellers regarding aviation security lists, while at the same time ensuring that our Passenger Protect Program remains a strong and effective security tool for Canada. I look forward to updating Canadians on the progress of the working group in short order.”
