Progress Monitoring Committee of the Mass Casualty Commission

Backgrounder

Description

The Progress Monitoring Committee (PMC) has been formed by the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia in response to the final report of the Mass Casualty Commission (the Commission), which contains 130 recommendations that call on all levels of government to improve community safety, undertake policy reforms, and address root causes of violence.

The report calls for the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia to establish an independent body to monitor progress as both governments assume the responsibility of carrying on the important work of the Commission. The PMC will play this critical role in monitoring progress on advancing the findings of the Commission’s final report, and ensuring transparency of efforts of Canada, Nova Scotia and other partners.

The PMC will comprise of a Founding Chair, appointed by May 31, 2023, who lead the work of establishing the PMC, including finalizing a Terms of Reference in consultation with external partners, and propose a list of PMC members to the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia. Up to 12 people are expected to form the membership of the PMC.

The Chair will provide leadership to the PMC and oversee the preparation of progress reports and an annual update on the progress the two governments to advance work in line with the Commission’s findings.
