Statement by Minister Sajjan on Fire Prevention Week

OTTAWA – October 7, 2023 – Today, the President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, issued the following statement:

“This week, we mark Fire Prevention Week in Canada. Fires have a devastating impact on families and communities, and it’s important to remember that they can spread quickly. As we continue to witness an historic wildfire season across Canada this year, I strongly encourage all Canadians to take the necessary precautions to ensure that they and their loved ones are prepared.

If you live in a potential wildfire area, ensure you stay informed with verified information sources that will provide you with the latest weather conditions, advisories, and other pertinent information throughout the season. To protect your loved ones and your home, ensure that you have an emergency plan and kit, and have installed active smoke alarms in multiple areas in your home. In addition, the outdoor area of your home can also be prepared by continuously clearing fire hazards such as debris and branches, having a working sprinkler, and ensuring that your vehicle has enough fuel should you need to evacuate. I would like to thank all firefighters, fire safety leaders, first responders, emergency workers, volunteers, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have worked tirelessly to keep our communities safe. Their bravery and expertise have been demonstrated time and time again. I thank them for their service and we honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

In addition, I would like to mention this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, established by the National Fire Protection Association: Cooking safety starts with you. Pay attention to fire prevention.^TM. Indoor fires can be destructive and dangerous. I encourage all Canadians to incorporate safe cooking measures to help prevent fires and injuries, and to increase fire safety knowledge at home to know what to do when their smoke alarm sounds.
